At the beginning of The Advent Season ( November 21) I’ve been thinking about the best Christmas gift I can give you. I’ve selected the same gift that was given to me by a friend forty-six years ago. Because that was my most cherished gift in my lifetime—’til now—I want to give it to each of you.
This gift is on the Spirituality side of Spirituality and Humor. But to my surprise and delight, humor was imbedded within my friend’s gift. The gift helped me to see that humor is a by-product, an addendum, an “Attachment” to spirituality.
Also, attached to my friend’s gift was the spiritual gift of GENEROSITY. Rosalie and I live in a Senior Excitement Center for more than 350 people. I take much delight in providing to our large staff and residents. wrapped mini-bars of candy: Snicker, Almond Joy, M & M’s, Reese’s, Twix, and others. I buy candy in bags of 150 wrapped, miniature pieces and daily put some on the shelf by our door. People keep choosing a favorite piece and I keep supplying candy. I put out about 250 pieces a month. When I first started, Rosalie mentioned the cost of the candy and I said, “I don’t drink, smoke, chew, cuss, nor run-around with other women. I don’t spend money on golf, poker, or betting on the horses. Can’t I have the joy of giving away something that others enjoy?” That settled it!
Because of the quantity and quality of joy they get in receiving, and I get in giving, I’ve concluded that GENEROSITY MUST BE A SPIRITUAL GIFT.
Think of special friends to whom you wish to give an unusual gift this Christmas. Invite them to join you here in receiving, UN-wrapping, and using this unique gift that friends love to give to each other.
